School Closed for National Day of Mourning

41st President George H.W. Bush dies

Students had an unexpected day off Wed., Dec. 5 as the nation and state observed a National Day of Mourning following the death of the 41st President, George H.W. Bush Fri., Nov. 30.

Students and faculty members learned about the school cancellation around 4:30 p.m. Tues., Dec. 4.

Most students said they were glad to have the day off, but it was a mixed bag as to whether they watched the funeral and related events.

“It was really nice to honor our president in this way,” Carlee Burnside, senior said.  Burnside she watch portions of the ceremonies throughout the day.

Ryan Skidmore, senior, said he was “very glad” school was cancelled, and he watched the funeral and coverage.

KayLee Parker, senior, said she watched some of the coverage and was happy she had the chance to watch it.

Some said they were surprised by the late-notice cancellation.

All sporting and extra-curricular events were cancelled for the day.

Students returned to school Thurs., Dec. 6 and had all eight periods.
