Lewis County High School Wrestling has 12 wrestlers this year, double the number from last year.

With more encouragement from Head Coach Tom Rogers and previous wrestlers, some football players decided to try it out as well as some other new wrestlers.

The team doesn’t have an official captain, but wrestlers said they all look up to junior grappler, Hunter Mitchell.

“Hunter is hands-down the most experienced wrestler on our team. He comes in with a teaching attitude everyday to try to get us new guys to be better wrestlers” is what Senior Jack Varah replied when asked about team leadership.

Mitchell explained his expectations for the season.

“I feel we will have a better turn out this year since we have some new athletic wrestlers.”  He is optimistic for states this year.  “I’m pushing myself to make it to States this year; my goal is to make the finals.”

The team will compete in a number of dual and tri-meets in the conference with Big 10 and Regional Meets happening in February.

In the Superior Photo Scholarship Tournament at University in Morgantown earlier this month, some LC wrestlers placed in the top ten.

Mitchell finished fourth, Ryan Metztgar finished fifth and Varah finished sixth.
